Natural Options Help Combat and Relieve Scleroderma

(NaturalNews) An estimated 300,000 people in the U.S. suffer from scleroderma, an autoimmune related disease that involves changes in the skin, blood vessels, muscles, and internal organs. Mainstream medicine attempts to treat the symptoms of scleroderma with immunosuppressant drugs, NSAIDS and corticosteroids, but has no cure and little advice for prevention. However, the world of natural healing has much to offer to help address scleroderma.

Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a widespread chronic connective tissue disease; its name comes from two Greek words: "sclero" meaning hard, and "derma" meaning skin. It is not contagious, infectious, cancerous or malignant. Skin symptoms are the most often ones associated with scleroderma and include:

*Blanching, blueness, or redness of fingers and toes in response to heat and cold
*Hair loss
*Hard or thick skin that may be abnormally dark or light
*Shiny hands and forearm
*Small white lumps beneath the skin
*Tight and mask-like facial skin
*Ulcerations on fingertips or toes

Digestive tract symptoms associated with scleroderma include:

*Bloating after meals
*Constipation
*Diarrhea
*Difficulty swallowing
*Esophageal reflux or heartburn
*Weight loss

Bone and muscle symptoms include: joint pain; numbness and pain in the feet; pain, stiffness, and swelling of fingers and joints; wrist pain. Scleroderma can also result in breath problems such as dry cough, shortness of breath and wheezing and may cause eye problems such as burning eyes, itching, and discharge.

Since scleroderma is considered to be an autoimmune disease, natural immune modulators may provide great help in many instances. Some of the best immune modulators are:

*Oleander extract, available in supplement form, is effective against a wide variety of immune disorders. Though it is a powerful immune stimulator, it is also an immune modulator for such disorders.

*Vitamin D3 is an immune modulator and is essential for optimum health. Most of us do not get nearly enough vitamin D3. A recent study has linked vitamin D deficiency to autoimmune and other diseases. See: http://www.tbyil.com/VitaminD_Genet...

*Magnesium deficiency has been strongly linked to autoimmune disorders and it is estimated that anywhere from 70 to 95% of us are deficient in this vital mineral.

*Curcumin is a powerful immune modulator which has many health benefits. It is also anti-inflammatory.

*Blackseed Oil (Nigella sativa) is another immune modulator and has been used for health issues for centuries.

A healthy, alkaline oriented diet is essential for helping relieve scleroderma. Apples (or pure unfiltered apple juice) may be particularly helpful. Apples contain pectin as well as malic acid, a substance that appears to ease pain and inflammation.

*Eat plenty of essential fatty acids and omega 3's.
*Cut back on consumption of whole grain foods.
*Avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners and foods containing bleached flour.
*Eat yogurt which contains active yeast cultures.

Toxin removal could make a difference, as toxins likely play a very large role in many autoimmune disorders and other conditions. In addition to cleansing the liver, colon/bowels and kidneys, parsley, chlorella, cilantro, and apple pectin are all good for removing toxins, especially heavy metals. Another item to strongly consider is removal of any amalgam fillings.

Bone and muscle problems can be especially troubling. Joint pain may be relieved with proven items such as a combination of plant derived minerals, colloidal silver, colloidal gold, MSM and GTF chromium. Many people have found black cherry juice very effective for relieving joint pain.

Note: Mainstream steroids/corticosteroids have been associated with increased risk of renal failure in scleroderma patients. Two natural items also warrant concern. Several studies have associated exposure to silica, especially silica dust, with scleroderma. Collagen buildup is a central feature and problem in scleroderma.

Why There is No Mainsteam Cure for Cancer

by Tony Isaacs, citizen journalist

Cancer: Why There is No Mainstream Cure

(NaturalNews) On the same day of the highly publicized "Stand Up to Cancer" telethon, the mainstream media widely ran an article titled "The top 10 deadliest cancers and why there's no cure". The top three "incurable" cancers listed were cancers of the lung, colon and breast followed by pancreatic, prostate, leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, liver, ovarian and esophageal cancers. An accurate report would have been titled "The top 10 deadliest cancers and why there's no mainstream cure".

The article stated that "Cancer cells, and how they grow, remain unpredictable and in some cases mysterious. Even after seemingly effective treatments, crafty cancer cells are able to hide out in some patients and resurface."

According to the article, we have spent about $200 Billion on cancer research since the early 1970's and there has been a rise in five-year survival rates for all people diagnosed with cancer from about 50 percent in the early 1970's to 65 percent today.

Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, stated: "We would not be where we are if basic and clinical science wasn't funded. Basic science teaches us about mechanisms, about how drugs may be effective, and we take that info and put it into a clinic to find out whether or not those new ideas work in cancer treatment."

An accurate article would have pointed out that five-year survival is not at all the same as a cure. It would also have revealed that the five-year survival rates have increased largely due to earlier detection and the statistical inclusion of highly curable pre-cancerous conditions such as DCIS - which was not considered to be a cancer in the 1970's.

A truly accurate article would also have told us about the natural and alternative cancer "cures" which have had outstanding success against even the most deadly cancers and would have listed the real reasons there is no cancer cure in sight for mainstream medicine, such as:

1. Almost all of the $200 Billion spent on cancer research has been spent either looking for genetic links, looking for ways to detect cancer earlier once it is already established, or looking for improved drugs and treatments that fit into the same mainstream paradigm of the past 40 years: trying to cut out, poison out or burn out the symptoms of cancer instead of addressing the root causes in order to actually cure cancer and prevent its return.

2. Cancer has become a bloated $300 to $400 Billion a year industry, including charitable foundations such as the American Cancer Society and other agencies with high salaries and perks. The continued existence and profits of the cancer industry depend on NOT finding a cure for cancer.

3. In medical schools whose major source of funding comes from big pharmaceutical companies and whose curriculum is controlled by the AMA, oncologists and other doctors are taught virtually nothing about the importance of proper diet and nutrition or about the healing and immune boosting herbs found in nature. Notably, you cannot patent nature. You may be able to patent synthetics and unique isolates based on nature, but that is not at all the same as natural items with all the supporting synergistic compounds.

4. Alternative therapies are little funded and are in fact vigorously suppressed because of the threat they represent to mainstream profits.

5. The people whose toxic products cause cancer and the people who profit from cancer direct research away from the true causes of cancer and towards the treatments and drugs they profit from.

6. Scant attention or research is directed towards prevention.

How Vegetable Compound May Treat and Prevent Arthritis

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

Vegetable compound may prevent, treat arthritis

(NaturalNews) Vegetables are storehouses of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients that help the body ward off and prevent disease. A recent study out of the University of East Anglia (UEA) has revealed that one such vegetable compound, known as sulforaphane, actually inhibits the function of the destructive enzymes that cause arthritis.

Several recent studies have linked cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower with cancer prevention, but it appears these vegetables provide other useful benefits as well. Eating them, say scientists, causes blood levels of sulforaphane to increase, which may enter joint tissue and prevent its destruction.

Osteoarthritis is an arthritic condition where joint cartilage slowly degrades over time causing severe pain. If left to run its course, the condition is debilitating. But in the presence of sulforaphane, the condition can be prevented and even reversed.

Nigella Sativa Capsules
"Laboratory studies show that sulforaphane may...block an enzyme that triggers inflammation and joint pain," explains Elaine Magee in her book Food Synergy: Unleash Hundreds of Powerful Healing Food Combinations to Fight Disease and Live Well. "Broccoli is rich in sulforaphane (a member of the isothiocyanate family of phytochemicals), which stimulates enzymes in the body that detoxify carcinogens before they have a chance to damage cells."

The preliminary trial is part of a long-term investigation into the methods by which sulforaphane benefits the body. Researchers hope to determine how easily the compound gets into joints and how much of the compound is needed to have a significant therapeutic effect.

Many retailers already carry sulforaphane supplements because the compound has multiple known therapeutic effects. And since it is a natural food supplement, it can be safely taken as part of a healthy diet to prevent or treat disease.

Saffron Just May Save Your Eyesight

A recent study conducted by researchers from both Sydney University and the University of L'Aquila in Italy have found that saffron, one of the world's most valuable spices, helps to protect eyes from being damaged by harmful UV rays. The herb also helps to slow the progression of eye diseases like macular degeneration, which causes blindness.

Collected by hand from the deep red stamens of the saffron crocus, the saffron spice is worth up to $800 per pound depending on its quality. It is used in a variety of applications including as a food spice, a coloring agent, and a treatment for disease. Some 90 illnesses, and counting, can be treated with saffron.

According to Monique Simmonds, an investigator of the medicinal properties of plants at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, saffron is rich in certain compounds that make it viable in treating a variety of different diseases.

"The unique compounds found naturally in saffron that we believe may have medicinal value include crocin and safranal. They belong to a family called carotenoids, which includes betacarotene [a type of Vitamin A]. Carotenoids give plants such as carrots or red peppers their color. Studies show that these compounds play key roles in preserving eyesight, protecting against cancer and preventing Alzheimer's," she explained.

In the eye study, macular degeneration patients who ate a diet containing saffron began to experience cell recovery, which resulted in improved vision.

"Saffron appears to affect genes that regulate the fatty-acid content of the cell membrane, and this makes the vision cells tougher and more resilient," said Professor Silvia Bisti, lead researcher of the study.

The National Institute of Pediatrics in New Mexico conducted a study in which researchers observed anti-cancer effects from taking saffron. Crocin and safranal, the two compounds that researchers believe help improve eyesight, are also implicated in having an anti-tumor effect as well.

"Research has found that saffron boosts immunity by helping white blood cells to mature, as well as increasing levels of enzymes that help the body break down toxins," said Fikrat Abdullaev, author of the study.

Another study published in the British Journal of Gynaecology found that saffron is effective at treating the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, including easing depression, irritability, and mood swings.
Saffron can be purchased for supplemental use as a bulk powder or in capsules. When buying any spice or herb, particularly ones that are used for cooking, make sure that it has not been irradiated.
